Storage and Handling

Coils : Individual coils must not be rolled off the edge of the loading platforms or trailers. These coils should be slung individually when off-loading with a crane. Uncoiling the pipe at site requires trained personnel. The manufacturer need to be consulted, as unloading of the coils may involve safety concerns of the workmen involved. If, due to improper storage or handling, a pipe is damaged or kinked the damaged portion should be cut out completely & joints fused , instead of wasting the entire coil.
Straight Pipes: Handling and storage of straight polyethylene HDPE pipes should be such so as to avoid penetration by sharp objects. When loading, unloading or handling of large outer diameter (>160 mm), it is preferable to use mechanical equipment like Hydra , crane Etc.
Safety precautions should be followed while unloading the pipes at site. Unloading of the large outer diameter pipes from trucks and trailers shall be with the help of properly set-up platforms and the same shall be rolled smoothly and not dumped from high ground. Alternatively it should be lifted with hydra having proper slings etc.
Stacking Platform should be flat & at least 200mm to 300mm above the ground level with smooth surface on top so that the layers of pipes stacked should be straight.

Plain Compacted flat base ground height (200mm/300mm) with flat murum/soil square platform subject to following conditions

No water logging /without any chance of submergence specially in rainy season.
Protection to small plants/grass formation & growth.
Proper side support by flat wooden planks
Generally, only webbing slings should be used to lift HDPE pipes by crane. Vacuum lifting may be used, but chains, wire ropes and hooks should be avoided.
HDPE Pipes should be stored either under shed in shade or in open with proper good quality UV resistant plastic/tarpaulin 200 GSM (fireproof) cover two layers protection till the outside temperatures is not more than @ 40-42 Deg C .
Storage of HDPE pipes near to hot areas should be avoided.
Proper side protection wooden or concrete round poles for the stack should be provided to avoid slipping or sliding. Refer Fig. No 1
The HDPE pipes shall be stacked on the flat surface ,free from sharp objects, stones or projections likely to deform or damage the pipe surface.
Care should be taken in handling HDPE pipes in wet or frosty conditions as they may become slippery.
As with all pipe materials, contact with oils, petrol, solvents or chemicals that might have an adverse affect on future performance should be avoided.
Polyethylene is combustible, but there are no restrictions on the type of fire extinguisher which can be used.
Stacking shall be done lot wise according to thesizes and priority requirement to avoid mixing of various sizes & pressure ratings, problems during internal shifting.
Surrounding area should be completely free from any fire items like cloth scrap/dry grass /plastic bottles etc.
